Calendar of Activities
The FA Summer Program will run from 1 July to 28 September 2024 providing a robust and practical training experience on AI in negotiation. The learning journey is structured in two stages and will cover four distinct domains of negotiation:
Stage 1: Gathering practical tools to negotiate in complex environments:
Leveraging over a decade of negotiation research and teaching at Harvard University, the Program will deliver a series of short and impactful video instructions and quizzes on conducting negotiations on the frontlines. In the course of these video instructions, participants will gain practical tools and methods to plan their negotiation in challenging environments, analyse complex situations, and understand the interests of various parties to find common ground.
Stage 2: Design of an AI Assistant to support complex negotiation:
Building on the general knowledge and negotiation tools gathered in Stage 1, the Program will train participants in creating their own AI Assistant applied to their domain(s) of interest. It will offer participants one cycle of activities for each of the negotiation domain selected for the Program. As of June 2024, the following domains have been selected:
1- Health in emergency (starting July 2nd, 2024)
2- Humanitarian access and safety (starting July 22nd, 2024)
3- Crisis negotiation (starting August 19th, 2024)
4- Climate negotiation (starting September 16th, 2024)
Other themes may be added in the course of the summer.
For each domain, the Program will offer the following sessions:
a. Introduction to AI in Negotiation: Each cycle will start with a practical session introducing AI technology to negotiation professionals, discussing the opportunities and constraints of operating with artificial intelligence in complex environments and at times highly sensitive issues.
b. Presentation by a Negotiation Expert: The focus of the cycle will move to the challenges and dilemmas of negotiating in the selected domain under the guidance of an experienced negotiator presenting a case, sharing valuable insights and strategies specific to the domain in focus.
c. Peer Discussion on Challenges and Dilemmas of the Domain of Negotiation: Following the presentation, participants will engage in discussions to address the unique challenges and dilemmas of the domain, fostering a deeper understanding and exchange of ideas.
d. AI Negotiation Labs: In the second week, participants will utilise insights from expert presentations and peer discussions to design and implement their own AI Assistant with the support of data scientists and machine learning specialists. These labs will focus on the development of AI tools to analyse negotiation contexts, assess the interests of involved parties, and explore strategies to mobilise influence within stakeholders' networks.
This structured approach ensures that each cycle is both informative and interactive, allowing participants to apply their learnings in complex negotiation and to experience AI usage in real-time. The four cycles offer a comprehensive learning journey, focusing on various aspects of negotiation.
